Prefix and Suffix
When writing a resume, only add a prefix or a suffix if it
is necessary. The reason why it is not necessary to include
a prefix before your name is to avoid discrimination.
Therefore, it would be wise to eliminate such prefixes as
Mr., Ms. or Mrs. In most cases, employers do not really care
if a female employee candidate is married or not, anyway. If
you have a gender-neutral name though, and you think that it
is necessary to emphasize your gender, you may include a
prefix. For instance, if you are applying for a post that
specifically asks for a female employee then make sure that
you do add Ms., or Mrs. if you have a male-sounding
or gender-neutral first name (e.g. Jamie, Morgan or
Russell). When it comes to adding a suffix (i.e. Sr., Jr.,
II, III and so on) you can also skip that. Generational
suffixes are unnecessary inclusions that would only divert
the hiring managers’ attention from your name. Potential
employers have no need to know the hierarchy in your family.
Nicknames
It may seem unprofessional to put a nickname in the heading,
but you may be able to get away with it if your first name
is too long or if it is unpronounceable. If you are
considering using a nickname, make sure that it is
acceptable. Do not add a nickname if you are going to use
your first name; it would be like using a middle name when
it is not really needed. Again, stick to what’s simple and
easy on the eye.
